He made the remarks on Thursday (September 24) at a cheque distribution programme for flood affected families in Banshkhali, Chattogram.
Shahe Alam said the BNP would not be concerned by threats and urged party leaders and activists to prepare for the upcoming local government elections.
“The BNP does not care about threats. Those who betrayed the BNP in the last election will have no place in the party,” he said.
He also said those who had worked for the party during difficult times would receive all legitimate benefits.
Referring to the BNP Jamaat alliance government formed in 2001, the state minister said then BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia had included two Jamaat leaders in her cabinet. He alleged that Jamaat had now forgotten that history.
The minister also said the current government was elected with a two thirds majority but claimed that Jamaat was already threatening to bring down the government through a long march within six months of its formation.
Shahe Alam said local government elections were expected to be held in January next year and called on BNP leaders and activists to begin preparations and work alongside the people.
The remarks came at a programme organised to provide financial assistance to families affected by floods in Banshkhali.
According to information presented at the event, severe flooding in July affected Banshkhali and Satkania upazilas of Chattogram. Around 12,000 houses were reportedly destroyed in Banshkhali.
The Chattogram District Council provided Tk 30,000 each to 510 affected families on Thursday to help them rebuild their homes. The total assistance amounts to Tk 1.53 crore.
The programme was attended by local administration officials and BNP leaders and activists.
