Local residents report that nearly 90 percent of the 100-foot-wide road stays occupied in some form, forcing vehicles to squeeze through narrow passages and triggering constant traffic congestion.
Pedestrians bear the brunt of the suffering. With footpaths fully occupied, people are forced to walk on the main roadway alongside speeding motorcycles and cars, creating severe accident risks, particularly for women, children, and elderly citizens during peak evening and night hours.
Local resident Md. Siraj Mia said, "The struggle of moving around because of the encroached footpaths is an everyday ordeal. Morning, afternoon, or evening—traffic jams persist constantly solely due to these illegal occupations and autorickshaw stands."
Residents question how such a vital road can remain largely occupied without intervention, pointing to potential coordination gaps among the authorities responsible for eviction and traffic management. Without regular monitoring, sporadic eviction drives fail to deliver permanent relief.
Addressing the issue, DMP Traffic Gulshan Division Deputy Commissioner (DC) Md. Tareq Zubayer stated that the authorities are well aware of the shops occupying the 100-foot road. However, ongoing security duties for Durga Puja have delayed immediate operations. He assured that mobile courts will be conducted in coordination with the Crime Division to completely clear the road once the festival concludes.
Meanwhile, citizens demand that these assurances translate into swift, permanent action to restore smooth traffic flow and pedestrian safety through continuous monitoring.
